Two 9th grade teachers at my school, Katie Ann Prescott and Lori McDonald, wanted some new ideas to get their students critically thinking while reading Frankenstein. I shared my Creative Expressions Ideas resource with them and they chose to have students tweet as they were one of the characters in the novel. Those who understand the critical thinking that needs to take place for readers to get into the mind of a character will see how this simple, yet complex task really shows what students understand.

Katie Ann and Lori chose to go the non-digital route for this activity, but I will give digital options below. The students received index cards and post-its. The assignment was to, on the index card, create a tweet from the mind of one of the characters. The tweet needed to reveal the main idea of the chapter from the characters point of view and include a hashtag to summarize the chapter. One of the teachers had each student individually create a tweet, while the other teacher allowed them to work in partners. The tweets were displayed in the hall under the appropriate chapter and character, which allowed the class to take a gallery walk to read the tweets. Each student then used the post-it notes to respond to the tweets.

Both Katie Ann and Lori were pleasantly surprised and amazed at the work that they students produced. This was a wonderful formative assessment piece that the teachers can use to see if the students truly understood how to analyze the character of a novel while addressing the main idea in a summary format.

Here are a few digital options you could use to replicate this activity (list is not exhaustive):

Tweet page - this will not allow for quote tweets

Tabletop Tweet - each student is responsible for the Tweet It, Capture It, and Hashtag It boxes and then is assigned a partner to switch with for the Retweet It portion.

Padlet (tutorials)- although you are limited to 3 walls on the free account, you could use the shelf template to represent the chapters/characters. Each of your classes could use the same Padlet wall. Enable the comment feature so that students can then use this to respond to the tweets.

As educators we need to be deliberate about making our content come alive in the classroom. Whether it be students virtually visiting a historical site they are learning about, such as Machu Picchu, or walking around the streets represented in a story they are reading, all students need those experiences.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If you haven't checked out my Exploring the World Through Virtual Field Trips resource, then I recommend you start there. This will give you an idea of all the resources available for you and your students.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If you are ready to start creating your own virtual field trips or better yet have your students start creating their own, then check out the presentation below. I share my favorite resources, give a tutorial on how to use, as well as provide multiple examples as a way to inspire.
While I am not a big fan of constant lecture from endless words on a presentation, there are times when you need to show information, images, etc. from a presentation and you don't want to be tied to your computer. Sure there are remote presentation clickers, some with fancy timers, but why pay money if you can use this for free.

Here are the steps to getting this tool up and running:

Install the Remote for Slides Chrome extension onto your computer

From your computer, open up a Google slides presentation (if you already had one open, then refresh) and click the 'Present with Remote' button

From your phone or tablet, open up a browser and go to s.limhenry.xyz

From your computer, hover over the loaded presentation and click on 'Show ID & Start Remote'

Enter the displayed code on your phone or tablet

You are now connected and can proceed through the slides from your phone.

While I am sad to see another Google service die, I am not overly torn up about it because I know there are others out there just as good or better. So before you get too upset about the death of goo.gl, check out these replacements.

Option #1: Bit.ly - https://bitly.com/
Pros: create custom URLs, edit the URL at a later time, get click analytics, has a Chrome extension

Cons: doesn't create QR codes
Unfortunately, the kits can be expensive. A great less expensive alternative is to purchase a couple Google Cardboard viewers or any other virtual reality headset and use the free Google Street View app. (iOS and Android versions available).

While you can't control the locations, you are still providing a unique and rich experience for the students. And for a lot less money.

Follow these steps to create a virtual reality field trip:

Using a cell phone, open up the Google Street View app

Search for a location

Click on one of the blue circles around the selected location

Click cardboard icon on the top right of the image

Place the device in the headset

Put the headset up to your eyes and turn around 360 degrees to enjoy the location as you are there.

The pasted text will appear in the same font and size as the Google document, slide, spreadsheet, sites, blogger, etc. No more need to paste the text and then reformat. Please note that this doesn't work with hyperlinks because when you paste the hyperlink disappears.
The session was on Using Humor for Higher Order Thinking. There were a lot of fun and creative ideas presented, but the Dating / Friendship Profile concept stuck with me and I wanted to share (I don't know what took me so long).

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The idea behind the concept is to have students to use humor to create a dating or friendship profile for a concept they are learning about. Here is the example that he shared in the presentation:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Fun, right!?! This got me thinking that it doesn't need to be limited to just concepts, which might be something that he mentioned in the presentation, but I forgot. You can have students use this to create profiles for novel characters, historical figures, vocabulary words, math terms, and so much more.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Have the students analyze the person/concept to really figure out the likes/dislikes, hobbies, skills, etc. Let the students get creative with how they present the information and definitely encourage humor as part of the profile.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here is an example created by Suzy Pessia, a teacher at my school. She used this as a model for her health science students. Click here to see more of her students' creations.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Google Drawing or Google Slides are excellent tools students can use to create these profiles. Here are a couple templates I created. Students know and love memes, so why not have them create their own educational memes on a concept they have just learned.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here is my example:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There are meme generator websites out there, but I have found that most are blocked with our school filter. If you are a Google district, have students use Google Drawing to create their meme. They can find an image free to use by going to Insert > Image > Search the Web. After the image has been added, they can add text boxes to write their blurb.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

In order to create a comic strip the students must using higher order thinking skills and think critically about the information to use.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There are websites out there, such as Storyboard That, that allow a limited free version, but I think Google Drawing or Google Slides is a perfect fit. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here is the comic strip template<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> I created in Google Drawings.
Grabbing students attention is one of those classroom management skills teachers need to adopt early. With that said, it is never too late to refocus the class with a new classroom expectation. Oftentimes, out of desperation for time, a teacher will yell the information to the class over some of the students talking. This is the number one mistake teachers can make. Students can feed off of getting a rise out of teachers. If you yell over them you are giving them the message that you don’t expect respect from them. As the person in charge, you need to have a plan and relay that plan to the students. The plan is to come up with some way to grab the students attention that doesn’t involve raising your voice.

In a secondary setting, especially 7th-12th grade, if you tried to use “1 2 3 eyes on me”...”1 2 eyes on you,” you would lose respect from your students. The problem is most resources you come across are all geared towards the elementary classroom, which makes new secondary teachers think that attention grabbers are not needed. This is definitely not the case, as secondary students are still kids.

Choose something that works with your personality. Keep in mind, while #8 might seem young, it is a good way to reinforce those hard to remember concepts.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In addition, hoax websites exist containing information on completely made up topics. There are also websites designed by people to completely mislead the public on a topic by providing unsubstantiated and/or one-sided information.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">While the United States was built upon the notion of freedom of speech, we also need to educate ourselves that not everything we read is valid or true. Do the vast majority of people know a fake news story or misleading website when they encounter one? Or are people reading articles/websites, interpreting them as true, and unintentionally spreading misleading or false information to friends and family?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What Makes a Site Credible
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I won't lie that it takes work to determine the validity of a website. But the work definitely pays off. While some educators and students use strategies, <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">such as the C.R.A.A.P. method,<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> I<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> personally ask myself the following questions:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Who is the author and source of the information?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What date was the website created and when was the last time information was updated?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What type of domain is the website? Is it a .com, .org., or .net that can be purchased by individuals? Is it a .edu that is reserved for colleges and universities? Is it a .gov that is reserved for government websites?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Does the website cite reliable sources?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Is the website well-designed and professional looking?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What is the writing style of the website and is it free from spelling and grammatical errors?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Does the website contain any disclaimers about the validity of the information? Check out the Federalist Tribune disclaimer. It states 'All the information on this website is published in good faith, entertainment and for general information purpose only. federalisttribune.com does not make any warranties about the completeness, reliability, and accuracy of this information.' If the website can not confirm its reliability, then this is not a website I want to use as factual information.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Know the Author
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It is important to do your research to learn about the owner and author of a website/news article in order to better understand the purpose of the information.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">With news articles, if the author's name is not readily available, then that is a huge red flag. And if the author's name is available, is it a credible source. Conducting a quick search usually gives you some insight to the author.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">With websites, sometimes you can't find the name of the registrant, so using resources such as whois.domaintools.com <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">or <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">easywhois m<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">akes it easy to find the information. Conducting a quick search using these sites will provide you with information, such as the registrant's name, <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">organization (if applicable), date the website was created, location of registrant, and more. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After you have the registrants name and/or organization, you can do a quick search to gain more information about the person.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">One of my favorite websites to have people conduct a domain search on is martinlutherking.org. We are often told that we can trust websites that end in .org, but in some cases it can be owned by a non-profit organization with a hidden agenda. Use the steps below to find out more on who owns and operates the <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">martinlutherking.org website. Follow these steps to conduct the search:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Go to whois.domaintools.com

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Enter martinlutherking.org in ‘Enter a domain or IP address’ field.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Make note of the Registrant’s Name and Organization

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Conduct a search to find out more information about the the registrant

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After you do the search and discover the owner of the site, check your research against this information to see if you uncovered the real truth. Were you surprised by who owns and operates the website? Does the information change your view regarding the validity of the website? How can you use this exercise with students? If your district blocks the martinlutherking.org website, as mine does, you can demonstrate the domain search tools using this site for the students and then have them research about the author. Then have them conduct their own domain search using another chosen website.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Resources Identifying Fake News Sources
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Below are sources which contain lists of websites that have been tagged as being fake or satirical news.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Factcheck.org list

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In addition, here are some known hoax websites that can be used to practice website evaluation skills:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Chrome Extensions
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Chrome extensions, found in the webstore, are small programs that add additional functionality to your Chrome web browser experience. Factitious<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> is an online game that tests your ability to identify a real vs. fake news story. The game can be played independently or the teacher can project the articles and have students work in partners to discuss the article. Have them use different colored sheets of paper to denote whether they believe the story to be real or fake. While the game alone won't educate us, we can use it as a way start identifying common characteristics of fake news stories. A nice feature of the game is the ability see the source of the article. Knowing the source of an article can play a key role in helping us determine the validity of the information.

I love Will Farrell, so of course I had to choose his background for my breaking news headline.

Think of an upcoming unit and incorporate this tool as a way for students to check their understanding. Students can create a headline on:

a story they wrote

a characters perspective or mood on a topic

an event in a historical figures life

a national event

understanding of a given prompt

opposing headlines from different political parties over the same event

and so much more...

Here are the existing background choices:

Instagram is one of the fastest growing social media tools out there. Below is a chart from The Statistics Portal on the growth of users over the last few years.

Many of the users are the students in our classrooms. I work at a high school and the two applications I see used the most by students are Snapchat and Instagram. Images are their world. They can tell full stories just with emojis alone. Below are 10 ways students can use Instagram (or a template) to showcase information:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Desmos, which started as an online graphing calculator, has advanced into interactive activities, with already made content for: conics, exponential, expressions, functions, inequalities, linear, linear systems, modeling, quadratics, and transformations.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In the past, I have made all of my card sorts using Google Slides and I will continue for non-math related content. For math, however, I will use the card sorting feature in Desmos, which I learned about from an amazing colleague, Meghan Hill.

Here is a quick video from Desmos that shows how it works.
